In their own words
From the moment patients enter the operating room until they leave it, they cannot help being full of worry about whether they are safe. As an anaesthesiologist, I believe the most reassuring thing I can do is to put safety first in how I anaesthetise. Responding well to a patient's condition as it changes moment by moment is the reason an anaesthesiologist exists. I will understand the fear, choose the anaesthesia that fits your situation, and stay beside you so that whatever happens can be handled safely.

Assessing underlying conditions is the baseline, and being ready for an emergency is essential. I treat anaesthesia as a responsibility, and practise accordingly.

With safety first, I try to understand the unease and worry patients feel, and to take some of it away through the right anaesthetic and the right response at the right moment.
